The original Ford Lehman Diesel was replaced with a John Deere 4045 80hp counter balanced marine Diesel engine in 1997. The engine is naturally aspirated (no turbo), simple, and reliable (no electronics or electronic controls). The engine is connected to a flexible shaft coupling and thrust bearing which reduces vibration, noise, and eliminates the need for engine alignment.
The engine room is located beneath the pilothouse sole and is incredibly roomy and open. Access to all sides of the engine is excellent.
The house bank is located to the starboard side of the engine room and consists of (6) 6-volt golf-cart lead acid batteries wired for 12-volts. A dedicated engine start battery is located to the starboard side of the engine room.
Batteries are charged by a high output alternator on the engine, a ~175 watt solar panel, and by a Victron Multiplus inverter / charger when on shore power.
Steering is a Capillano hydraulic system with two helms and an autopilot. Emergency steering is provided by a tiller connected directly to the rudder stock. The keg-hung rudder is of GRP with a heavy duty acid-proof steel stock.

Commentaires du Broker
The Nauticat 38 Pilothouse is a Finnish built motorsailer known for their top-notch quality of construction and first-rate interior finish and teak joinery. The sellers of this Nauticat 38 have been exceptional stewards of this incredible vessel since she was new and even travelled to the factory while she was being constructed. This vessel has been based in the Pacific Northwest her entire life and has cruised and gunk-holed extensively between the Puget Sound and Alaska. Her owners have spared no expense in keeping her updated and well-maintained.
The Nauticat 38's pilothouse offers a warm and dry helm with 360 degree visibility and a second helm in the cockpit provides the option for sailing on-deck. Despite being a motorsailer the Nauticat sails quite well, and the sellers of this boat raced her extensively over their decades of ownership.
Particular features worth special mention include:
- Newer 1997 John Deere 4045 Counterbalanced 80hp marine Diesel engine with high output alternator (these engines are known to run for tens of thousands of hours)
- Maxprop feathering propeller and thrust bearing for smooth operation while underway
- Newer North Sails (main, mizzen and foresail - 2017) and Spinnaker
- Hydraulic backstays for easy adjustment
- Updated Garmin Navigation electronics
- Custom swim step and swim ladder + boarding ladder for safety and boarding from a tender
- Updated systems (inverter/charger, batteries, Wallas DT40 diesel heaters, galley appliances, toilets, etc.)
- Interior and exterior woodwork is in outstanding condition
- Maxwell windlass (2023) with 300 ft of 5/16" chain
- 175 watt walk-on solar panel installed on coachroof
Whether you intend to daysail or cruise for weeks or months at a time or even live aboard I cannot speak more highly of the condition and characteristics of this Nauticat 38 pilothouse motorsailer. She is a versatile vessel ideally suited for those that wish to cruise with safety and comfort.
